FingerTips can only scratch the surface of the Internet - pointing you at the key resources that you will find useful. But inevitably you will soon have to venture out beyond the list of sites FingerTips offers.

The internet can be a very frustrating place. It's like a huge library where the books have been shelved in random order, with hundreds more dumped in piles on the floor every day. The answer is to ask the equivalent of a clued-up librarian for help. There are two different types of internet librarian - search engines and directories, and the rather cleverer multi-engine (or "metadata") systems.

With an estimated 600 million pages online to choose from, even the best search engine can cover only 35 per cent of the available material. So if one librarian can't help you, don't give up - just ask another one. The secret in searching is to be patient and think carefully about what you are trying to find.

When you find a site that could be useful to you in the future, you can bookmark it within your browser. For more information on using search engines and book-marking Web sites, see our list of recommended Internet tutorials.
