On 21st July 1969 Neil Armstrong became the first man to walk on the Moon - as he put his left foot down he declared: "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." He had earlier reported the Eagle lunar module's safe landing with the words: "Houston, Tranquility Base here. On This Day 47 Years Ago – Apollo 10 Astronauts Got a Bird’s-Eye View of the Moon

On 22nd May 1969 Apollo 10 astronauts got a bird's-eye view of the Moon Two US astronauts aboard Apollo 10 are on their way back to the safety of their mother ship after their lunar module came to within eight nautical miles (14km) of the Moon's surface. Colonel Thomas Stafford and Commander Eugene Cernan were carrying out a rehearsal for a planned Moon landing in the summer.
