2019-03-14: Salsa Bailando Thursdays at Drift Southsea!

The Drift Bar in Southsea is the venue for Bailando every Thursday run by DALE Afro Latin Entertainment from 10pm to 3am. When I arrive around 10:30pm for the salsa dancing upstairs there are usually plenty of people who attended the earlier bachata lessons from 8:30 to 10pm staying on for an hour or so to practice to bachata music. Around 11pm the salsa music begins and people start arriving from downstairs particularly when it get crowded. Members of The Portsmouth University Salsa Club usually arrive around 11pm.

Recently salsa tracks have started earlier than 11pm and played more often which is most welcome to those of us who prefer the real thing! 😉
Sometimes there are not so many staying on from the earlier bachata lesson.

Sometimes many ladies come up later for a dance or two.

Sometimes the room empties around 11:30 and sometime people stay until much later.

This means the event is a bit of a mystery tour which makes it exciting whatever happens! It used to be a free mystery tour before 11pm – £2 after but now it costs £2 from 10pm onwards. It’s still good value for money though!

Parking: There’s plenty of parking round the back in the Ashby Place car park.

More details may be seen on the facebook page Dale Afro Latin Entertainment.

Dilshad & Asia run salsa & bachata lessons followed by social dancing at Drift every Monday from 8pm to midnight.

Philip Wake is feeling blessed. 14Mar

Well that was an excellent mystery tour upstairs at Drift with DALE Afro Latin Entertainment â€“ plenty of excellent dances with some lovely salseras including Sarah, Mayolla, Choana, Elle, Dama & Tazara even though some of them were beginners. This was because they followed my leads really well even though they didn’t know what they were doing. It works better that way as there’s no possibility of their anticipating the lead!
One of them kept looking down so I told her to close her eyes for the rest of the dance which she did and then followed much better because she wasn’t confusing herself by worrying about where her feet had to go.
When I lead I’m effectively moving the lady’s head to a new position and if she doesn’t think about it her brain will automatically make sure the next foot to move ends up vertically below her head to avoid falling over. This is totally automatic and requires no thought process whatsoever.
Now I‘m ready for a long weekend of fun dancing in London:
Fri: El Grande Returns on Friday 15 March with Vendula +2
Sat: Vol.27 with DJ Alex Gee, Netherlands/Colombia & Erick the Saint (I Like It Like that, salsa dura on vinyl) in Brixton
Sun: Richmond Sunday Live!
