2019-11-27: Salsa Explosion Wednesdays at Bar So Bournemouth!

Enrique Perez & his partner  Rob Carroll run an excellent evening of salsa at Bar So in Bournemouth every Wednesday. There are  bachata workshops from 7:30pm to 8:30pm followed by Cuban salsa workshops from 8:45pm until 10:30pm.  All levels are catered for with the one and only Moe Flex usually providing the advanced level for bachata & salsa. See the facebook page I Love Salsa Bournemouth for more information.

The workshops are followed by social dancing until 1am with a good selection of salsa & bachata music by DJs Moe and Enrique with the occasional kizomba. Although the salsa lessons are Cuban there are plenty of ladies attending who can follow cross body though most of the men do lead Cuban style!

As an proponent of Puerto Rican Salsa Romantica it’s not a problem for me to vary what I lead according to the preferences of the lady. (Puerto Rican means the best of cross body & cubana and Salsa Romantica means smooth & sensual.)

Timetable

  • 7:30pm Bachata workshops for various levels
  • 8.45pm Cuban Salsa classes for all levels in 5 Rooms
  • 10:15pm Salsa Social with DJs Moe and Enrique  which is when I arrive!
  • 1am Close

Winter Gardens Car Park 1 is the best place to park only a hundred yards from the venue! Drive down the hill (Exeter Road) and turn first left. Drive past the Truth Nightclub and turn left into the car park then left again to park as close as possible to the venue.

Philip Wake I was glad to see Moe was giving the lesson as I knew that’s what Kasia and her Salsa Solent Portsmouth family were hoping for and she told me afterwards that she had loved his lesson. The party atmosphere was certainly rampant tonight and I had lots of excellent dances. Thank you PetyaKlara, Susanne, PaulinaIvonne, Talula and the many other charming ladies I danced with and well done two of you for being able to produce 5 and 4 spins respectively in both directions when I lead them!

I asked a little lady for a dance but she said she couldn’t dance. I told her she didn’t need to be able to dance – all she had to do was follow the lead of the man who is dancing her. She didn’t believe me so when the next salsa started I held her in frame and told her not to look down. I said she should look at me and just try to feel what I was doing. I proceeded to lead the basic and after 3 bars she got it and managed to do it with some style in the rhythm of the music. This made her smile after a few more bars so I lead a cross body but she didn’t get the idea of just walking round. The music was a bit fast so I just carried on with the basic for a while until she seemed to get confused when I suggested I dance again with her later when a slower track was playing. A bit later she asked me to dance with her again and she did better this time when I lead a cross body. I stopped while she was ahead and I gave her my card so that she could look at www.wake.co.uk/my-salsa and practice the basic at home so that we could have another go next week. She gave me a big smile and said she was looking forward to it. Some girls get the cross body straight away and I can then risk a clockwise turn on 567 but others need more time getting use to following the music and a man at the same time. Last night for example I danced with the salsa beginner who had practiced ballet when she was younger and to her I could lead almost all my repertoire after 2 dances and she followed me with amazing style – just like that!
