2019-10-16: Salsa Explosion Wednesdays at Bar So Bournemouth!

Enrique Perez & his partner  Rob Carroll run an excellent evening of salsa at Bar So in Bournemouth every Wednesday. There are  bachata workshops from 7:30pm to 8:30pm followed by Cuban salsa workshops from 8:45pm until 10:30pm.  All levels are catered for with the one and only Moe Flex usually providing the advanced level for bachata & salsa.

The workshops are followed by social dancing until 1am with an excellent selection of good salsa music by DJ Enrique which will motivate you to dance all night. Although the salsa lessons are Cuban there are plenty of ladies attending who can dance cross body though most of the men do lead Cuban style!

As an proponent of Puerto Rican Salsa Romantica it’s not a problem for me to vary what I lead according to the preferences of the lady. (Puerto Rican means the best of cross body & cubana and Salsa Romantica means smooth & sensual.)

I Love Salsa Bournemouth at Bar So tonight was good fun even though most of the dances I had were with beginners. To get me going I had some lovely dances with IvonneTerez and Susanne to some brilliant music from Moe Flex and then I danced with beginners with various levels of ability. I lead each one according to their perceived ability and only increased the complexity of my leads as they gained confidence with the basics. One called Annie got as far as following my leg behind one way to leg behind the other, throwing our arms in the air as we did so and she even started combing her hair instead with a big smile on her face!

Then I spotted a group of 4 girls standing far away from the main room so I went over to see if any of them wanted to dance. Three of them said they were too shy to dance but one of them was willing to have a go. First I gave her a bachata which she followed very well as I slowly increased the number of turns in a row from one to three. Later I gave her a meringue which I told her was good for learning how to transfer your weight correctly for all the Latin dances – toe heel, toe heel putting the full weight on each leg as you transfer your weight from one to the other which implies straightening the leg you land on as you naturally bend at the knee of the other and mobilise the hip on that side. She couldn’t help doing this correctly as she followed me doing it to the beat of the music. Later I gave her a salsa too which she followed brilliantly at first just the basic, then a half cross body lead to the left and then a clockwise turn!

She was very happy that I had shown her how to dance and said she would be back next week for lessons with her three friends who were amazed at the way she had learned so quickly as was I !
